Top tips to keep your email marketing flowing

By Anita Glover, Marketing Manager | Published 28 Feb 2024

For small to medium sized businesses email marketing is one of the most effective and affordable ways to reach your target audience, build trust, and increase sales. Brilliant!

But sadly, it’s not enough to have killer content and amazing imagery. ? You need to make sure your emails don’t get rejected, marked as spam or blocked.

With new email deliverability rules from Google and Yahoo making it even trickier, we’ve pulled together some awesome advice to help you out.

Keep it clean

Start by spring-cleaning your email list. Remove inactive or invalid email accounts. A tidy list ensures your emails don’t bounce back like a rejected party invitation.

Go all Terry’s chocolate orange

Use segments to tailor your content based on recipient preferences, behaviour, and demographics. Relevant emails are more likely to land in the inbox.

Run like clockwork

Send your emails on a consistent schedule as predictable sending patterns help establish trust with ISPs

Focus on the quality

Avoid using spammy language, excessive capitalisation and multiple exclamation marks. Most of all, deliver content that recipients find valuable and engaging.

Have loyal subjects

A great subject line increases open rates and positively impacts deliverability.

Be authentic

Now for the techy bit…. Use email authentication mechanisms like SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance). These verify your identity as a legitimate sender, boosting your credibility. You may have set some or all of these up in the past, however Google and Yahoo are implementing updates to the policies to better protect recipients from receiving spam email.

For lucky Select Technology customers we usually proactively manage this for you – phew. Otherwise, you might want to chat to your IT team or email domain provider.
